Abstract

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption has been linked to adverse metabolic outcomes and sleep disturbances. This study investigated the association between SSB intake, body mass index (BMI), and sleep quality in young adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 314 young adults. Weekly intake of SSBs (soft drinks, energy drinks, sweetened juices, and sweetened tea/coffee) was assessed and categorized into low, moderate, and high consumption groups. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and BMI was calculated from anthropometric measurements. Linear regression analyses examined associations between total SSB intake, PSQI global score, and BMI, adjusting for age, sex, and physical activity. Higher total SSB intake was significantly associated with poorer sleep quality, demonstrated by higher PSQI global scores in both unadjusted (β = 0.082, p = 0.009) and adjusted models (β = 0.078, p = 0.013). Female sex and higher BMI were independently associated with worse sleep quality. Greater SSB intake was also positively associated with higher BMI after adjustment (β = 0.34, p < 0.001), while higher physical activity showed a protective effect. Participants with high SSB consumption exhibited significantly higher scores across all PSQI components and higher BMI compared with those in the low and moderate intake groups (p < 0.05).
