Abstract

This article explores the features of teaching social and emotional skills (SEL) through English language instruction in rural schools of Kyrgyzstan. The issue of developing SEL in rural school settings is highly relevant, as students in remote areas face limited educational resources, a shortage of qualified teachers, and a lack of opportunities to develop communication skills. Learning English in a rural school serves not only as a means of acquiring a foreign language but also as an effective platform for developing universal social skills required in the 21st century. The author emphasizes that communicative approaches, role-playing, project-based learning, and emotional literacy practices contribute to developing cooperation, empathy, self-confidence, and collaborative decision-making. Since the educational process in rural schools is often complicated by socio-economic inequality, these conditions are given special attention. The paper provides examples of successful practices implemented within international projects such as Access Microscholarship, Teach for Kyrgyzstan, and Peace Corps, demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating SEL into English lessons. A key condition for successful SEL implementation is teacher preparation and support through training and mentoring, as well as the involvement of parents and local communities in the educational process. In conclusion, the formation of social and emotional competencies through English learning not only improves the quality of education but also enhances students’ social adaptation, empowering rural children and enabling their successful integration into modern society.
