THE PHILOSOPHY OF NOTHING: FROM HEGEL TO HEIDEGGER (From the Logic of the Absolute to the Existence of the Finite)

This article explores the philosophical evolution of the concept of nothingness in the thought of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Martin Heidegger. It begins with Hegel’s speculative-logical interpretation of nothingness as a necessary abstraction within the dialectical movement of becoming — a moment in the self-development of spirit. The analysis then turns to Heidegger’s radical rethinking, in which nothingness is no longer treated as a logical construct but as an existential experience — a profound ontological disturbance that discloses the finitude of human existence. The article argues that this transition reflects a deeper shift in philosophical paradigm: from rational universalism to the ontology of finitude, from systemic logic to existential questioning. Central to the comparison is the distinction between nothingness as a function and nothingness as an event, between conceptual negation and existential anxiety.
