THE CONCEPT OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN THE TRADITIONS OF WESTERN SCIENTIFIC THOUGHT

This article is dedicated to the analysis of the concept of civil society in the context of Western scientific thought. It examines the main theoretical approaches that have developed from antiquity to the present day, with a focus on key traditions: the L-tradition, tracing back to John Locke, and the M-tradition, associated with Montesquieu. The evolution of the concept of civil society, its interaction with the state, and its role in the political system and the protection of citizens' rights are discussed. Special attention is given to the differences between Anglo-American and continental political thought, as well as modern interpretations and critiques of the concept of civil society. The article highlights the key stages in the formation of liberal-democratic principles, reflecting the development of society and the interaction of its institutions. Within the frameworks of liberal, Marxist, and neoliberal schools, the main theoretical approaches to the role and place of civil society are compared. As a result, it is emphasized that in Western thought, civil society is regarded as an important factor in shaping political consciousness, legal culture, and civic engagement.
